Trea Turner makes spectacular mic’d-up play at MLB All-Star Game and Bryce Harper loved it

Trea Turner did not let being live on the air stop him from making a spectacular play during the American League’s 5-3 win over the National League at the 2024 MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday night.

The Philadelphia Phillies shortstop was mic’d up at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, in the bottom of the second inning, along with All-Star teammates Bryce Harper and Alec Bohm.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. belted a ground ball toward center field with one out and a man on first.

Turner swiftly reacted by running to his left and hurling his body at the edge of the infield to sweep up the ball and toss the ball from his stomach to secure the out on Yordan Alvarez, who was darting to second base.

A smile spread across Turner after making the play.

Announcer John Smoltz was in awe when the Fox broadcast showed a replay.

“It officially is the greatest play of a player who has worn the mic,” he said.

Harper loved what he saw from his teammate yelling: “Let’s go. Are you kidding me?”

It’s one thing to make a jaw-dropping play at the All-Star Game, but it’s another to do it while mic’d up.

Others haven’t been as lucky this season.

The Dodgers’ Kiké Hernandez knows how it feels to be mic’d up, and not have it turn out well.

During the Dodgers’ 2-1 victory over the Yankees in June, he was live with announcers Wayne Randazzo and Dontrelle Willis on Apple TV+

Gleyber Torres hit a grounder toward Hernandez at third base.

At that time, Willis also asked Hernandez: “You guys are [a] very close-knit ball club. Where does that come from?”

Despite Willis saying he could answer after the pitch, Hernandez couldn’t make the play as the ball bounced off his groin area and Torres beat out his throw.

Another embarrassing moment was shared live between Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña – who was mic’d up against the Mets – and third baseman Alex Bregman.

The two tracked down a pop fly delivered by Jeff McNeil, and both watched the ball drop between them.

There was no communication between the teammates, each likely hoping the other would catch it.
