Scottie Scheffler remains British Open favorite with Shane Lowry, Xander Schauffele after Round 1

There’s a familiar name at the top of the British Open odds board after a wild day at Royal Troon Golf Club.

Scottie Scheffler, who shot 1-under 70 on Thursday, remains the favorite to win the Open Championship after Day 1 of the tournament.

Scheffler, who came into the weekend with the best odds to come out on top once again, brought his odds at winning the British Open from +450 pre-tournament to +400 at FanDuel Sportsbook

If he wants a second major win this year, Scheffler will have to catch Shane Lowry, who is one off the tournament lead after shooting 5-under 66 in the first round, and Daniel Brown, who is the tournament leader at 6-under.

Lowry, who at 37 is looking for his second major title, has the second-best odds (+500) ahead of Friday’s second-round action after coming into the tournament at +4000.

Brown, a little-known golfer before his incredible round Thursday, is at +3500, tied for the eighth-best odds in the field.

Scheffler and Lowry are closely trailed by Xander Schauffele (+550), who is the only other golfer with odds better than 14-1.

Schauffele, the reigning PGA Championship winner, shot a two-under 69 in the first round.

Justin Thomas (+1400) and Brooks Koepka (+1600), who have both won multiple majors, are also in the hunt after strong first rounds.

Tough conditions at Royal Troon Golf Club took down some of the top pre-tournament contenders.

Rory McIlroy, who came into the weekend looking to redeem himself after a collapse at the U.S. Open, is tied for 129th in the field after going 7-over, virtually taking him out of contention.

McIlroy was the second-favorite behind Scheffler (+750) before Thursday’s play.

Bryson DeChambeau, who won the U.S. Open, didn’t fare much better, shooting 5-over.

DeChambeau had the fifth-best odds at +1800 pre-tournament.
