Richard Simmons laid to rest as cause of death is still under investigation

Richard Simmons can finally rest in peace.

The fitness icon’s private funeral was held in Los Angeles on Friday with his family and closest friends. The news comes nearly one week after Simmons was discovered unresponsive by his housekeeper on Saturday, July 13, at his home, just a day after he turned 76.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our beloved Dicky was laid to rest this morning surrounded by only family and closest friends,” his publicist, Tom Estey, told People on behalf of Simmons’ brother, Lenny. “We pray for your continued love and support during this very difficult time.”

Simmons was buried at the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary, according to his death certificate obtained by TMZ. The document did not list a cause of death, noting the manner is still under investigation.

The fitness guru allegedly fell the night before his death, but refused medical attention because it was his birthday.

The weight-loss guru — whose real name was Milton Teagle “Richard” Simmons — allegedly suffered a fall in his bathroom the night before his passing, with sources telling the outlet that he refused to get medical attention despite his housekeeper’s concern.

He reportedly felt dizzy before the fall but declined assistance because he wanted to be home on his birthday, insiders claimed.

The Post confirmed with the LA Medical Examiner’s Office that Simmons’ cause of death was deferred and is pending investigation. That was also noted on his death certificate, per TMZ.

It could take up to three months before the cause is determined.

While the TV personality’s death remains a mystery, a source said police “are not pursuing the investigation as if foul play was involved at this point.”

Simmons, who in March revealed he was diagnosed with skin cancer, had been a recluse for over a decade before his death. While his decision to stay out of the Hollywood spotlight concerned fans, the famed aerobics instructor gave an update on his health in a rare interview published just one day before his passing.

“I feel good!” the late star told People. “I am grateful that I’m here, that I am alive for another day. I’ll spend my birthday doing what I do every day, which is to help people.”

Simmons also shared he was working on a Broadway show about his life and expressed how much he missed his devoted fans.

“I know people miss me. And you know what? I miss them, too,” he shared. “But I’m able to reach them through phone calls … and through emails.”

Simmons’ brother released a heartfelt message after his death.

“I don’t want people to be sad about my brother. I want them to remember him for the genuine joy and love he brought to people’s lives,” Lenny wrote on Simmons’ official website. “He truly cared about people. He called, wrote, and emailed thousands of people throughout his career to offer help.”

Lenny urged fans to “celebrate his life,” adding, “We are in shock. Please respect the family at this difficult time.”
