Mets’ Harrison Bader hopes to return soon from ankle injury
Harrison Bader remained out of the starting lineup Friday because of a mild right ankle injury, but the team’s starting center fielder doesn’t expect to be out much longer.
Bader suffered the injury in the first game of the Subway Series against the Yankees when he was picked off while trying to steal third base Tuesday.
An MRI exam showed no structural damage and an injured list-stint is not something that has been discussed.
“I just slipped on the dirt a little bit on the base-stealing attempt when I got picked off, kind of jolted the capsule a little bit,” Bader said before the Mets knocked off the Braves, 8-4, for their fifth straight win. “I put myself in a position that’s just a little challenging the past couple of days to be myself for this team. Just working through it, everything feels great.”
The 30-year-old Bader, a Bronxville native, has been a strong offseason pick-up.
He has played a sterling center field and has hit better than expected, batting .263 with a .703 OPS, eight home runs and 36 RBIs.
Tyrone Taylor has started the last three games in center in place of Bader.
“I anticipate turning the corner very quickly with this thing,” Bader said. “I want to go out there and help this team.”
Rookie right-hander Eric Orze’s second major league outing went much better than his first. On July 8, the reliever didn’t record an out in a loss to the Pirates. He put that behind him Friday.
Orze, recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, came in for Kodai Senga with one out in the sixth inning and allowed a homer to Marcell Ozuna. But he recorded five outs after that, including a strikeout.
“It was good for him to not only finish that inning, but go back out for the seventh,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “Good outing for him.”

During this extended hot stretch, the Mets have become particularly tough to beat at home.
They are 15-3 in their last 17 games at Citi Field and are over .500 at home at 28-26.
Remember, they started 0-5 in Queens.
Francisco Lindor’s 10-game hitting streak came to an end in the win.
The Mets traded reliever Cole Sulser to the Rays for cash considerations shortly before first pitch.
Sulser, 34, was designated for assignment Monday.
He appeared in four games for the Mets this year.
Left-handed reliever Josh Walker was designated for assignment after the game.
