Biden ‘can’t even say how old I am’ as prez gives blunt explanation for leaving 2024 race
President Biden offered a blunt explanation this week about why he got out of the 2024 presidential race.
“Although it’s a great honor to be a president, I think I have an obligation to the country to do what I — most important thing you can do. And that is — we must, we must, we must defeat Trump,” Biden said during an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, which is set to air Sunday.
“When I ran the first time, I thought of myself as being a transition president,” Biden added. “I can’t even say how old I am – it’s hard for me to get it out of my mouth.”
President Biden’s departure from the race came weeks after a disastrous debate between the incumbent and former President Trump, as a growing chorus of Democrats demanded he step aside.
At first Biden refused, saying only “Lord Almighty” would drive him from the race. He only agreed to exit the race after a cascade of Democratic House and Senate members began calling on him to drop out and as major donors warned they would withhold future giving.
After he finally called it quits, Biden endorsed Vice President Harris — who quickly consolidated support among party elders.
In the same interview, Biden also said he feared the outcome of the election could result in violence.
“All the stuff about if we lose, there’ll be a bloodbath, it’s a stolen – look what they’re trying to do now in the local election districts where people count the votes, putting people in place in states where they’re going to count the votes,” Biden said. “You can’t love your country, only when you win.”
