Fans think USWNT players look ‘violently hungover’ in Olympics photo

To some fans, it appeared that the effects of Team USA’s gold medal celebration were still lingering when the women’s soccer team posed for a photo in Paris on Sunday.

The 18 players and four alternates were scattered across steps — holding the gold medals they earned after a 1-0 win over Brazil in the final Saturday — for the photo, and the looks on their faces, or lack thereof, sparked plenty of reactions across social media.

“Choose your fighter: hangover edition,” one user wrote, zooming in on four collections of faces.

“LMAO they’re all hungover and Hal’s just over there on the left grinning without a care, so adorable,” another user wrote, referencing alternate midfielder Hal Hershfelt smiling on the far left of the photo.

“Every single one of them look violently hungover,” a third user typed, adding a loudly crying emoji at the end.

The player garnering the most reactions, though, might’ve been Gotham FC star and USWNT midfielder Rose Lavelle, who was stationed in the front row of the photos — wearing sunglasses and donning an expressionless face.

Lynn Williams, another Gotham star, also appeared to be holding just the gold medal — and no ribbon attached to it — in the photo, and according to a photo posted to X of the team’s celebration, it seemed to have become detached during the team’s celebration Saturday night.

Clips from the event surfaced on social media and showed dancing and champagne as Team USA basked in the spotlight of clinching their fifth Olympics gold medal and first since the 2012 Olympics in London.

“Loving these hungover #USWNT pics,” another X user posted in response to the Team USA photo. “Olympians: they’re just like us.”

Mallory Swanson, the wife of Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson, scored the decisive goal in the 57th minute, and Team USA won all six of its games during the program’s first Olympics under new head coach Emma Hayes.

“We’ve grown so much,” Swanson said postgame, according to the Associated Press. “And that’s really cool to me seeing that. We’ve grown on and off the field. And you keep probably hearing it — we’re playing with joy. We’re having so much fun and I’m just so happy.”

Then, after that, the celebration began.
