Florida lawmakers demand Biden admin probe after Cuban Communist Party leader migrates to US
Furious Florida lawmakers have urged the Biden administration to probe how a former high-ranking Cuban Communist Party leader who played a role “in suppressing the Cuban people for decades” was recently allowed to migrate to the US.
Republican members of Florida’s congressional delegation cited their “profound disgust” following reports that the communist official, Manuel Menendez Castellanos, had flown into Miami last week via a US-run visa parole program for Cubans, the Miami Herald reported.
“We are outraged that an individual with a role in suppressing the Cuban people for decades was permitted the extraordinary privilege of US entry so that he could spend his retirement in freedom and comfort,” the lawmakers wrote in a Wednesday letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The lawmakers, led by Rep. Mario Diaz Balart of Miami, called on the Biden officials to investigate the circumstances around Menendez’s permitted entry — pointing to federal laws that generally prohibit Communist Party members from being allowed to immigrate.
“We request that you assess whether the law was followed in this case and if not, what specific processes are in place to ensure that a similar mistake does not recur,” they wrote.
“Given this prohibition in US law, it would seem likely to us that a high-level, longtime Cuban Communist Party member and agent of that brutal dictatorship would be inadmissible for US entry.”
Menendez was previously a top official within Cuba’s Communist Party in the city of Cienfuegos, El Nuevo Herald reported.
He also, at one point, represented Cuba at international forums and was given awards by the Cuban government, the outlet added.
Menendez was reportedly allowed to enter the US under the Cuban Reunification Parole Program, which permits certain citizens and permanent residents to apply for family members to be granted humanitarian parole.
US Customs and Border Protection wouldn’t comment on the recent arrival, citing privacy reasons.
The letter was co-signed by fellow GOP Reps. Maria Elvira Salazar and Carlos Gimenez, as well as Republican Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott.
