Chiefs’ Clyde Edwards-Helaire to miss four games amid struggles with PTSD

The Chiefs placed running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the non-football illness list, according to ESPN, as he battles PTSD.

He will now miss the first four games before he’s eligible to return.

Kansas City recently signed Samaje Perine for running back depth.

Edwards-Helaire, whom the Chiefs drafted in the first round in 2020, opened up about his PTSD earlier this month.

“Sometimes I’m admitted into the hospital, something I can’t stop throwing up and it’s just, I [don’t] know [anything] pretty much to stop it,” Edwards-Helaire said. “Real bad dehydration … but it’s really just mentally just not being there.”

Edwards-Helaire also took to social media about the topic after missing multiple practices.

“Living With PTSD is no small feat, its hard and very overwhelming [sic],” Edwards-Helaire posted on X. “Within the last month Ive Had many flare ups and the Amazing staff here at the #Chiefs have been helping me get through some tough times. I’ll be back rolling next Practice!”

He claimed his PTSD stemmed from an incident on Dec. 22, 2018, though he did not provide details.

Two LSU — where Edwards-Helaire played collegiately — football players, while trying to sell an electronic item, shot and killed an 18-year-old trying to rob them on that date, according to the Baton Rouge Police Department.

Edwards-Helaire was one of those two players, according to the Associated Press.

He has taken a backup role to Isiah Pacheco for the last two years.

Last year, Edwards-Helaire recorded 223 rushing yards, 188 receiving yards, and two total touchdowns.

As a rookie, Edwards-Helaire rushed for a career-high 803 yards and four touchdowns and added 297 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown.
