Maria Sharapova had jokes after ESPN cameras captured her looking somber while at the US Open on Thursday.
The Russian tennis great — who retired after 36 titles, including five Grand Slams, in 2020 — become an internet meme while in a suite during the women’s semifinals match between American Emma Navarro and Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
“I look like I just missed a second serve return on break point and saw my coach’s reaction,” Sharapova wrote, including two laughing emojis.
Sharapova, 37, looked concerned when the broadcast focused on her.
Sabalenka would take out Navarro in straight sets and will take on another American, Jessica Pegula, in the final on Saturday.
She was seen looking up at the video board while talking with someone out of camera frame.
Many online had fun with the moment.
“Maria Sharapova is still worried of her coach reaction,” one person wrote on X.
“This is going to be a phenomenal meme/gif,” another added.
“Haha you look gorgeous, as always,” someone said.
Others gushed over Sharapova’s power suit in her return to the US Open.
The 6-foot-2 beauty — who won the tournament in 2006 — donned a cream-colored blazer and pant set by Burberry, which featured an open back and delicate string detail.
Earlier that day, Sharapova was a part of a panel with Robin Roberts, Billie Jean King and Shonda Rhimes at the US Open for its Champions of Equality event.
