49ers reveal Christian McCaffrey has Achilles tendinitis in both legs in worrisome update
Christian McCaffrey’s injury status is even worse than once thought.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Monday that the star running back is dealing with Achilles tendinitis in both of his legs.
“During the time he’s had it in both,” Shanahan said, according to The Athletic. “I think it started in one, you overcompensate, it went to the other. But mainly one of them has just been bothering him, but he’s had it in both.”
The 28-year-old McCaffrey, who was placed on injury reserve before Week 2 and will be eligible to return in Week 6 against the Seahawks, recently traveled to Germany for treatment of the injury.
On Sunday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport suggested that McCaffrey could be back by “at least early November” after his therapy overseas.
“It was similar to a PRP treatment, and my understanding, now that he is back in the United States, it seemed like the treatment went well, and there is a chance he could run on hard ground — grass, basically — this week, which would be a step forward,” Rapoport said.
“For those worried about McCaffrey not playing at all this year, my understanding is the 49ers are not rushing him, but they do expect him back at least by early November. That is a good sign for McCaffrey.”
A three-time Pro Bowler, McCaffrey is coming off one of the best seasons of his career, winning the AP Offensive Player of the Year award with 1,459 rushing yards, 564 receiving yards and 21 total touchdowns.
Third-year running back Jordan Mason has slotted into McCaffrey’s spot in San Francisco’s backfield, rushing for 447 yards and three touchdowns through four games.
The 49ers are off to a slow start, going 2-2 ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the Cardinals in Santa Clara.
