Pete Alonso’s massive Mets moment sent Citi Field watch party wild
The Mets may have been 900 miles away in Milwaukee, but Citi Field was the place to be on a night the Mets’ miraculous season continued with an astonishing 4-2 win over the Brewers in Game 3 on Wednesday night to move on to the National League Division Series.
The thousands of Mets fans in attendance for the quickly organized watch party in Queens went crazy when Pete Alonso hit a go-ahead three-run home run to put the Mets ahead 3-2 in the top of the ninth inning.
The crowd became even more ecstatic when Francisco Lindor completed a game-ending double-play to clinch the win and punch the Mets’ ticket to the next round of the playoffs.
“One of the greatest wins I’ve ever seen,” a fan could be heard shouting in one video of the Mets winning the game.
“Oh my god!” and “Let’s go!” could be heard in another jubilant video as fans celebrated the wild win.
Similar scenes played out when Alonso hit the three-run home run as fans celebrated emphatically at what was transpiring in Milwaukee.
Citi Field wasn’t the only place celebrating the Mets’ victory in New York.
The Empire State Building posted a shot of the landmark lit up in Mets orange and blue and in a separate post, the account shared a photo of Grimace with a caption thanking the purple McDonalds character, who has become a quasi-unofficial mascot for the team.
The victory sets up a showdown between the Mets and NL East rival Phillies in the division series.
This year also marks the first time that the Mets and their American League counterparts, the Yankees, have been in the division series at the same time since 2006.
Game 1 between the Phillies and Mets is scheduled for Saturday at 4:05 p.m. and Game 2 is on Saturday with the series shifting back to Queens on Tuesday.
