The last time the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals met in the postseason was 44 long years ago in the 1980 ALCS.
Back then, George Brett’s squad swept Reggie Jackson’s Bronx Bombers in three games.
This year, Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Gerrit Cole and the AL’s No. 1-ranked Yankees look to rectify that wrong in the 2024 ALDS.
“I think we match up well against anyone,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone claimed in an SNY interview. “…we’re excited for the challenge of it.”
Over the course of the regular season, the teams met up seven times; the Bronx Bombers won five of those contests.
However, it wouldn’t be wise to write off the Royals just yet. They have a formidable trio at the top of their rotation in Cole Ragans, Seth Lugo, and Michael Wacha. On offense, manager Matt Quatraro’s squad boasts emerging star Bobby Witt Jr., wily veteran catcher Salvador Perez, and offense machine Vinnie Pasquantino, who just came off the IL.
“What we’ve seen from this Royals team all year is that they’re very well-rounded,” Boone added. “Excellent starting pitching…their bullpen…down the stretch was really good. I think they’re a formidable team, they’re a scary team and will probably walk into here with a lot of confidence.”
If you want to be there to root on the Yankees against a potentially scary team, the five-game series kicks off Saturday, Oct. 5 at Yankee Stadium. Gerrit Cole is starting for the home team; Michael Wacha got the nod for the Royals.
