John Sterling describes Yankees baserunning blunders in hilarious fashion

John Sterling’s unique way of describing the action on the field brought something extra to a Yankees baserunning blunder on Tuesday night.

In the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 2 of the ALCS, Jazz Chisholm got picked off second base after leading off with a hit.

After Anthony Rizzo drove home Anthony Volpe with a double, he followed in Chisholm’s footsteps.

Guardians pitcher Pedro Avila threw a pitch that got away from Cleveland catcher Austin Hedges, prompting the Yankees’ Anthony Rizzo to attempt to steal third base in The Bronx.

Unfortunately for the Yankees first baseman, Hedges was able to quickly recover and caught Rizzo in between second and third.

That’s when Sterling came up with a hilarious comment.

“Rizzo is going to be picked off. He’s in the middle of second and third,” Sterling said on the call on WFAN. “Hedges now throws to second. On the way to third, back to second, back to third. Tagged out, end of inning. Boy if that wasn’t the Yankees, that’s what they do. Run the bases like a bunch of drunks.”

Sterling, 86, attempted to continue to wrap up the call and toss to a break, but began to chuckle a bit over his description of what had just transpired.

The Yankees had been leading 4-2 at the time of the base running blunder.

They did add two more runs thanks to an Aaron Judge homer in the following inning to pad their lead, before defeating the Guardians 6-3 to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Sterling had come out of retirement late in the season to call the Yankees’ run-up to the playoffs and has been calling every game during the postseason run.

The series shifts to Cleveland on Thursday for Games 3, 4 and 5.
