Mother of the bride’s controversial DIY dress goes viral: ‘Complete trainwreck’
A woman has been brutally mocked on social media after sharing the DIY outfit she made to wear at her stepdaughter’s wedding.
The dress, inspired by a $1,673 gown by British fashion designer Stella McCartney, was deemed a “complete trainwreck” by members of a wedding shaming group on Facebook.
In her post, the woman explained she wanted “something really special to wear as stepmother of the bride.”
While she couldn’t afford the actual Stella McCartney dress, which she initially found on Pinterest, she attempted to crochet her own version.
“How hard can it be?” she wrote in her post.
“So 350 hours later I was still trying to finish it so that explains the price tag.
“So I can use it again in June for another step daughter’s wedding I am creating a cobwebby net between the flowers the same colour as the underdress and thinking about dying it a lime/olive color.
“Do you think this will work? Only the family will have seen the dress before.”
Other members of the Facebook group were at first supportive, praising the woman’s craftsmanship, before the comments took a turn for the nasty.
“It got worse as I scrolled down. The bra showing under the underdress that doesn’t match. And it’s a bad copy of a dress someone else made,” one person wrote.
“Does she hate her stepdaughter intentionally, or is she just that out of touch?” another said.
“I think it would look better on,” a third said, adding: “On fire.”
Many were also surprised by the length of time the dress had taken the woman to complete.
“350 HOURS! That is two and a half months at a full time job,” one person said.
“Ma’am, your time is worth more than that. People are bonkers.”
