The best blankets come in many shapes, sizes and materials, so chances are that you’ll opt for any that feel the coziest when tossed on top of you.

But, when you really sit down and think about it, what makes a good blanket? Are faux fur options the way to go, or is it better to invest in a weighted blanket? What about the best travel blankets to pack in your suitcase?

At Post Wanted, we tested dozens of blankets across different categories and brought you our edit of the 15 best ones to buy in 2024.

Whether you’re on the lookout for an extremely cozy gift this year or want to invest in a practical purchase you’ll use in the colder months, we recommend any of the below options. After all, we’ve been lounging and sleeping with them for years, so you know this is the it-list.

From throw blankets to heated blankets, here’s the best of the best.

Best Blanket Overall: Sunday Citizen Snug Bed Blanket

Sunday Citizen Snug Bed Blanket
Sunday Citizen

Pros:

  • Sherpa-like and hypoallergenic material
  • Softest blanket tested
  • Spacious and oversized to fit two people

Cons:

  • Price may be unreachable for some

If you’re looking for a blanket that’s versatile enough to sleep with but also great for cozying up with your partner to watch Netflix, then the Sunday Citizen Snug Bed Blanket is our top choice. It features a lightweight, cloud-soft design and is one of the best machine-washable blankets tested.

What’s more, this blanket is hypoallergenic (which is preferred for sensitive skin) and has a slightly oversized design. Across the board, it receives our stamp of approval.

Material:100% Microfiber | Weight: N/A (mentions “lightweight”) | Size: Queen, King | Color options: 6

Best Faux Fur Blanket: Anthropologie Sophie Faux Fur Throw Blanket

Anthropologie Sophie Faux Fur Throw Blanket
Anthropologie

Pros:

  • The closest blanket to a sherpa you’ll find
  • Extra-large design

Cons:

  • Slightly heavy, compared to others tested

Truth be told, I need a $1M gift card to Anthropologie (everything is add-to-cart worthy) — and the brand’s top-rated Sophie Faux Fur Throw Blanket is no exception. I’ve been reading with it on my couch for weeks now and know it’s going to be one of my most-reached for. Though a bit of a splurge, it’ll be the only throw you’ll need.

Not to mention, it has a slightly heavier feel compared to others tested, which is great if you don’t prefer lugging a weighted blanket around.

Material:100% woven polyester fibers | Weight: N/A | Size: 60 inches x 70 inches | Color options: 10

Best Luxury Blanket: Cozy Earth Cuddle Blanket

A pile of fluffy blankets
Cozy Earth

Pros:

  • Oversized design, perfect for sharing
  • Drapes beautifully wherever you place it (couches or beds)
  • Crafted with a longer pile that the body sinks into

Cons:

  • Limited color options

Meet the Cuddle Blanket From Cozy Earth. With “cozy” and “cuddle” in the title, there is no doubt that this blanket was built for comfort. The thick polyester construction provides layers of warmth and softness, and the faux-fur texture drapes beautifully on any surface. We only wish it came in a few more colors, so we could have one for every room in the house.

“Big, chunky blankets for the win,” shared Commerce Reporter, Miska Salemann. “I own a few pairs of pajamas from Cozy Earth, but this was my first time laying my hands on one of the iconic Cuddle Blankets. To say it lived up to the hype is an understatement. I adore the rounded edges and neutral color — the way the light hits the faux fur makes it look hyper-realistic. Of course, the cuddle factor is off the charts. It’s silky smooth to the touch and the fluffy, long fibers create a cacoon around your body.”

Material: 100% polyester | Weight: N/A (mentions “substantial weight”) | Size: 60 inches x 50 inches — 80 inches – 60 inches | Color options: 2

Best Throw Blanket: UGG Whistler Throw Blanket

UGG Whistler Throw Blanket
Nordstrom

Pros:

  • ‘The perfect cozy blanket,’
  • Relatively affordable price point
  • Will keep you warm even after months of use

Cons:

  • Doesn’t hold up too well in the wash — we recommend washing it no more than once monthly

UGG’s Whistler Throw Blanket is the one blanket I recommend to everyone. If there was an award for ‘perfect cozy throw blanket,’ it would go to this one, though keep in mind I prefer anything that feels like a furry, warm hug, and that may not be everyone’s first preference.

As far as blankets go, this one is widely accessible and is available at Nordstrom. It comes in a vast color selection, too, and its super-soft design is the one I reach for the most.

Material:100% polyester | Weight: N/A | Size: 60 inches x 70 inches | Color options: 9

Best Budget Blanket: Threshold Microplush Bed Blanket

Threshold Microplush Bed Blanket
Target

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Large
  • Available in a variety of colors
  • Ultra-plush and great for sleeping

Cons:

  • Blanket may be prone to shedding

If you’re on the hunt for a budget-friendly blanket, look no further than the Threshold Microplush Bed Blanket. Angela Tricarico, Decider commerce writer/reporter is *obsessed* with this $35 buy.

“Since I only sleep with a comforter when it’s very cold, I use this blanket on top of my sheets every night,” she said. “It keeps me nice and warm in the winter, but it’s still breathable enough to use in the summer months.” More, she uses the smaller twin XL size (which used to be her bed blanket, but is still in excellent shape) as a couch blanket for chilly nights watching TV.

Here’s a story that shows just how obsessed she is with this specific blanket. “I can be particular about sheets and blankets, especially when I’m on vacation and sleeping in hotels — it’s mostly a feel/texture thing for me,” Tricarico said. “I just know what I like! So, I’m in Disney World for over a week, and I’m not loving the blankets provided for the pull-out couch that’ll be my bed for the trip. I went on Doordash and had this very blanket delivered to my hotel from the local Target. When I say it’s the only blanket I use, I really do mean it.”

Material: Microplush | Weight: N/A | Size: 92 inches X 108 inches | Color options: 14

Best Weave Blanket: Bedsure Cotton Waffle Weave Blanket

Bedsure Cotton Waffle Weave Blanket
Amazon

Pros:

  • Budget-friendly
  • Breathable
  • Spacious

Cons:

  • Not ideal for extremely cold temperatures

Looking for a quick buy that’ll do the job of keeping you warm but won’t cost you an arm and a leg? The Bedsure Cotton Waffle Weave Blanket fits the bill (for less than $35, too) and is one of the most breathable types I tested.

Keep in mind that while it’s super breathable, it’s not the warmest. Since I’m a hot sleeper, I prefer using this as my bedtime blanket when I want an extra layer of coziness aside from my bed sheets.

Material: 50% Cotton, 50% Rayon | Weight: 1.8 lbs | Size: Throw – Oversized King| Color options: 17

Best Travel Blanket: Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Ribbed Throw Blanket

Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Ribbed Throw Blanket
Neiman Marcus

Pros:

  • Adorably packaged (makes a great gift)
  • Has a snuggly warm make yet doesn’t leave you sweating
  • Packable

Cons:

  • Not as large as other blankets tested

The Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Ribbed Throw Blanket is surely worth the hype. Since I’ve been living in the brand’s matching CozyChic Robe, I knew that its Throw Blanket would be a hit — and I haven’t been able to snuggle with anything else.

Though a splurge, it’s truly an investment worth making. From its unbeatable texture to ultra-cozy design, it’s a unique find you just have to buy and use for yourself.

Material: polyester | Weight: N/A | Size: 54 inches x 72 inches | Color options: 9

Best Wool Blanket: Brooklinen Modern Check Lambswool Throw Blanket

A blue and brown blanket from Brooklinen
Brooklinen

Pros:

  • 100% wool fibers have naturally temperature-regulating properties
  • Rich colors and beautiful pattern
  • Wool has a lower carbon footprint than other materials used in blankets

Cons:

  • Only two color options
  • On the thinner side

This checkered throw blanket is checking all of our boxes. Style? The double-sided design is pretty much screaming fall with the blend of soft green, deep forest, warm purple, and burnt yellow. Comfort? It’s made of lambswool, naturally retaining heat and, arguably, getting softer with age. Quality? It’s made in a 100-year-old German family mill, so we’re not asking too many questions.

“As I’ve said before, I’m not a huge fan of thin blankets, but I have made an exception for this 100% wool throw from Brooklinen,” shared Salemann. “The combination of rich, earthy hues and carefully placed flannel pattern is just stunning. It’s modern, yet timeless, and perfect for fall. I imagine nestling up in this blanket while sitting out in the park or on the patio. Wool is naturally temperature-regulating, and breathable. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that wool has a lower-carbon footprint than some other materials used in blankets.”

Material: 100% wool fibers | Weight: N/A | Size: 51 inches – 75 inches | Color options: 2

Best Crotched Blanket: Bearaby Cotton Weighted Blanket

Bearaby Cotton Napper
Bearaby

Pros:

  • Warm and well-made knit detailing
  • Chunky and durable
  • Buttery soft material

Cons:

  • Though warm, it tends to be quite heavy

The Bearaby Cotton Napper is one of the best options you’ll find (as far as weighted blankets go), namely because it keeps you warm while still being breathable. It’s perfect for watching TV on the couch or draping over your legs when sleeping at night.

Its 100% cotton make is the star of the show and upon first touch, you can tell it’s a blanket of the highest quality. What’s more, there are four size options to choose from — 10 lbs, 15 lbs, 20 lbs, and 25 lbs — that make it customizable to your body weight.

Though it’s going to be heavier than your usual blanket due to its type, it’s quite heavy at the 15 lb size, so we recommend sizing down one if you prefer more of a toss-on style that still reaps the benefits of a weighted blanket.

Material: 100% cotton | Weight: 10 – 25 lbs | Size: 40 inches – 64 inches — 48 inches – 72 inches | Color options: 7

Best Electric Blanket: Sleep Number Warming Blanket

Sleep Number Warming Blanket
Sleep Number

Pros:

  • Adjustable and even heat
  • Auto-shut off function
  • Spacious design

Cons:

  • Price may be unreachable for some

If you’re someone who’s always cold (preach to the choir), then you’ll adore the Sleep Number Warming Blanket. It’s a notch above your average warm blanket (whether a throw or faux fur) and makes a great gift for birthdays, holidays, and more.

Namely, it has adjustable warmth controls (for each side!) with even heat retention to ensure there won’t be any cold spots. Another great feature is its auto-shut-off function to ensure it won’t be heating up after 10 hours. This blanket stands out from the pack not only because of its extra level of warmth but also because it’s widely spacious. Place it on your bed or on your couch, and you’ll always be in that cozy sweet spot.

For a weighted, option with a cooling effect, we recommend the Gravity Cooling Weighted Blanket ($162.50). It’s offered in multiple sizes and shades, and designed with 100% premium cooling lyocell, derived from eucalyptus.

Best Mid-Weight Blanket: Pottery Barn Faux Fur Ruched Throw

A group of blankets on a rack
Pottery Barn

Pros:

  • Silky texture
  • Available in a wide range of colors
  • Substantial weight to it (for those who like a heavier feel)

Cons:

  • The material heats the body quickly, best for colder nights

Pottery Barn’s best-selling cozy throw is made with a combination of acrylic, polyester, and a touch of spandex to create a silky feel and a gorgeous, ruched cascading motion that looks as good in pictures as it does in real life. The ultra-plush pile does have a good amount of weight to it and is ideal for chiller, fall nights curled up on the couch. Like many Pottery Barn products, the blanket is responsibly made and safe from over 1,000 harmful substances.

“Easily one of the best blankets I’ve ever owned,” said Salemann. “It has a luxe look to it, and really does feel like a million bucks. I’ve never been a fan of thin, flat blankets. I like something that brings a bit of dimension to the couch, and this one does the trick. It’s on the thicker side and has a bit of weight, which is ideal for those who like to sink into something warm. I also appreciate the fact that it is reversible, and the polyester side has a smooth surface if that’s what you desire.”

Material: Woven of 85% acrylic, 13% polyester, 2% spandex (reverses to 100% polyester) | Weight: 750-grams | Size: 50 inches x 60 inches — 60 inches x 80 inches | Color options: 13

Best Weighted Blanket: nuzzie Knit Weighted Blanket

nuzzie Knit Weighted Blanket
Amazon

Pros:

  • Adorably packaged (makes a great gift)
  • Has a snuggly warm make yet doesn’t leave you sweating

Cons:

  • Price may be unreachable for some
  • Not as large as other blankets tested

As soon as I unboxed the nuzzie Knit Weighted Blanket, I knew it was going to be my new favorite (and, I was right).

With weighted blankets having a widespread reputation for being “too heavy” and “not soft enough,” this brand surely stands out among the pack. It’s the one I resort to when I’m reading in the evenings or watching a new Netflix movie. Not only is it ultra-soft but, for its weight, it’s extremely breathable, too.

More, the blanket is offered in a suite of vibrant and neutral options alike, from eight to 22 pounds. Its open-knit design always keeps me cozy — regardless of the weather — while the 100% recycled filling allows its keen design to always be breathable.

Material: Soft jersey knit outer fabric, 100% recycled filling | Weight: 8 – 28 lbs | Size: XS-XL | Color options: 9

Best Summer Blanket: Olivia Wendel Cheetahs Blanket

Olivia Wendel Cheetahs Blanket
Urban Outfitters

Pros:

  • Doubles as art
  • Lightweight makes it ideal for summer
  • Doubles as a throw blanket

Cons:

  • Price may be unreachable for some

Truth be told, this artful blanket is one we’re glossing over. And, Jackie Goldstein, VP of commerce, *loves* it.

“I registered for an Olivia Wendel blanket after coming across her brand on Instagram a few years ago through another artist I follow,” she shared. “Her designs are gorgeous: whimsical but also calming, and powerful in a way: the blankets often feature powerful animals, such as lions or cheetahs. I mainly wanted the blanket based on how it looked, but when I received it I was thrilled.”

She said it’s just the right amount of weight and warmth and it’s soft but in a sturdy kind of way. “I use it as a throw blanket on a gold velvet Chesterfield couch and love how it gives a pop of different types of colors,” she added.

Material: 100% cotton | Weight: N/A | Size: 54 inches x 72 inches | Color options: 2

Best Personalized Blanket: BaubleBar On Repeat Throw Blanket

BaubleBar On Repeat Throw Blanket
BaubleBar

Pros:

  • Makes a wonderful gift
  • Many styles to choose from
  • Lightweight

Cons:

  • Not as warm as others tested, but great for a quick throw-on

Out of all the blankets I tested, BaubleBar’s On Repeat Throw Blanket was the most exciting one to receive in the mail, much ado to its personalization. Some patterns are more ‘in your face’ than others, but the On Repeat Throw Blanket is the perfect, less-than-$100 buy that has my first name’s initial with some trendy, neutral flair.

Because it’s a throw blanket, it can’t be reviewed on the same scale as, say, a sherpa blanket. It’s not the warmest, but it does the job and a style I recommend to all my friends IRL.

Material:100% woven polyester fibers | Weight: N/A | Size: 60 inches x 70 inches | Color options: 5

Best Heated Blanket: Lovesac Radiant Footsac Blanket

White blanket with a white cord and a white object featuring black text
Lovesac

Pros:

  • Six heating levels
  • 18″ foot pocket keeps your feet warm
  • Removable cord

Cons:

  • Cord may be bothersome to some people

Have you ever sat under a blanket just wishing it was a bit longer, so it could cover your poor, cold toes? Lovesac has a solution to that dilemma: the Footsac. This faux fur throw is made with cotton-poly backing, boasts six heating settings, and comes with an 18-inch foot pocket that keeps your feet warm. It has a cloud-like texture, and the cord is detachable, so you can bring it anywhere!

How We Tested

Best Blankets Review
Victoria Giardina

As I began testing blankets in 2022, I started by researching top brands and best-selling items from top retailers and bedding brands. For some blankets, I’ve been keeping our testing criteria in mind (which include material, type, size, fabric and care, among others).

However, some blankets were recently called in for testing and am continuing to continue our research and reviewing methods to update this guide. I’ve made sure to test the blankets for at least a week, which led to some great binge-watch sessions and cozy evenings in bed).

Here are the New York Post Shopping testing criteria when reviewing blankets:

  • Material: Of course, no blanket is created equal. In testing blankets, I made sure to be mindful when comparing apples to oranges and assessed each one — whether weighted or throw — based on its respective category.
  • Type: The type of blanket greatly determines its unique features. For instance, a throw blanket that’s lightweight and easy to drape over your couch or bed is preferred, while a heated blanket has unmatched warmth and temperature features.
  • Size: When testing, I called in blankets of all shapes and sizes, including full/queen and king. Some blankets have a one-size-fits-all make, so I considered that as well.
  • Warmth: Regardless if a blanket costs $20 or $200, warmth is a key factor. If a blanket didn’t keep me all warm and cozy, it didn’t make the cut.
  • Care: Though it’s not necessary to wash your blanket (perhaps with one of the best washer and dryer combos we rounded up) every day, I made sure to wash and dry each one to check for shrinkage and any tears.

More guidance for picking the right blanket

We’ve reviewed some of the most popular blankets of 2024, but you still might be wondering — which one is right for me?

There is such a wide assortment of colors, types, warmth levels, and materials that it can be difficult to discern which type will meet your needs. Below, we’ve answered a few frequently asked questions about blankets, so you can make the best purchase possible.

What type of blanket is best for winter?

Once the nights start getting chillier, you might decide to tuck away the lightweight throws and best summer blankets for something that brings some heat. Based on our testing, we’ve found that the warmest blankets often are constructed with a few different materials.

Wool is a wonderful choice because it can help insulate the body’s natural heat in cool weather. We’ve also found that thicker, heavier faux-fur blankets are great heat retainers. Ultimately, nothing is more effective than an electrically heated blanket like the Sleep Number Warming Blanket.

What blanket is most comfortable?

Everyone has their preferences when it comes to comfort. Some prefer a thinner blanket, while others like something weighted. Some like a more breathable fabric, while others want to be enveloped in piles of fur.

If you’re after the softest material, you may want to look for blankets made with cashmere or a best fleece blanket. From our testing, we’ve also found that plusher, mink-like fabrics are exceptionally soft. Those with longer piles have a silkier, more cloud-like feel.
