EPISODE 93: WHAT’S NEXT FOR YANKEES AFTER DISAPPOINTING 2021 SEASON?
October 6, 2021
Another year of Yankees baseball, another underachieving season. In his four seasons managing the Yankees, Aaron Boone has one trip to the ALCS to show for it. The Yankees’ season ended Tuesday night in Boston as their $36-million-a-year ace could not even make it through the third inning. He gave up three runs and that was all the Red Sox needed to get past a lifeless Yankees lineup outside of Giancarlo Stanton. Where do the Yankees go from here? What do they do this offseason?
To answer those questions and recap a disappointing 2021 season, we bring you the season finale of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Jeff Nelson and Chris Shearn.
EPISODE 92: INSIDE YANKEES-RED SOX WILD-CARD SHOWDOWN FEAT. KEN SINGLETON
October 4, 2021
The Yankees live to see another day. A loss on Sunday could have meant two days, had the crazy AL wild-card scenario played out. But Aaron Judge walked it off and the Yankees now ship up to Boston for Tuesday night’s do-or-die wild-card game. A win over the Red Sox would mean a trip to Tampa for the ALDS. Will the Yankees get to Tampa?
We discuss that question and preview the matchup with the Red Sox on the latest “Pinstripe Pod” with Jeff Nelson and Chris Shearn, featuring a conversation with the newly retired Ken Singleton.
EPISODE 91: WILL YANKEES GET A WILD CARD SPOT? FEAT. KEN DAVIDOFF
September 30, 2021
Gerrit Cole is making $36 million a year for the Yankees through 2028. He’s going to have a ton of crucial starts in September and October in his time with the team. Wednesday night was a true test for him in Toronto in a pivotal game…and he failed. Cole gave up five runs and despite the offense coming back for him, it wasn’t enough. Their ace is going to need to be better next time out, because it could be in the one-game playoff. Will the Yankees hold on and get a chance to play a game for a spot in the ALDS?
To talk about Cole and the Yankees’ push for a wild-card spot, we bring you a new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Yankees great Jeff Nelson and Chris Shearn, featuring a chat with The Post’s Ken Davidoff.

The Yankees went shipping up to Boston and left sweeping their way out. Three games. Three wins. What a monumental, much-needed sweep for the Yankees with just six games now remaining in the regular season. They now own the top wild-card spot and can control their own destiny in this final week. It was quite the impressive showing, but six games against the Blue Jays and Rays are still ahead, and it’s no lock that the Bronx Bombers will be in the postseason just yet.
To talk all about a crucial sweep in Beantown, we bring you a new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Yankees great Jeff Nelson, featuring a chat with Barstool Sports’ Eric Hubbs.

They will likely need to go 6-3 at worst to get one of the wild-card spots, but it might take a 7-2 effort to make the postseason.

The Yankees team that won 13 straight games seems like a lifetime ago.
The Yankees lost to the lowly Orioles Thursday, then lost two of three to the below average Cleveland Indians in their own building over the weekend. They enter Monday 1.5 games back of the second Wild Card spot in the American League. Are they going to miss the playoffs?
That’s the big question on the latest “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Jeff Nelson. Rabid Yankees fan and actor Nick Turturro dropped by the podcast to vent his frustrations with the team and discuss what they need to do to shake things up in the offseason.

Those final nine come against the Red Sox and Blue Jays, who they are tied with for the Wild Card, and the Rays, who are now running away with the AL East. The Orioles have been a doormat for most teams this season. If you’re struggling, the greatest cure is to see the Orioles ahead for three games on your schedule. Well, don’t tell that to the Yankees. The worst team in baseball came into The Bronx and took two of three games, with the only win coming in walk-off fashion. It was not a very convincing weekend for fans of the Yankees, who are now 2-6 since the Bronx Bombers’ 13-game win streak ended.
The good news in Yankees land is that “The Captain,” shortstop, Number 2, Derek Jeter will be inducted into Cooperstown on Wednesday. As if things could not get much worse for the Yankees, Sunday happened. A no-hitter into the eighth inning and a 4-0 lead quickly became a 5-4 loss, and the Yankees’ hopes of competing for the AL East division title have likely gone out the window. Luckily for them, they are still only 3.5 games back of the second wild-card spot, but nobody wants to hear about that right now. This team is playing inconsistent baseball and having all-time brutal meltdowns from their bullpen in games they should have in the bag. July 12, 2021
Just when you think the Yankees might be turning a corner, they remind you why they don’t look anywhere close to a playoff team this season. After winning the first two games of the series against the Astros in Houston and holding a 7-2 lead going into the ninth inning on Sunday, they found a way to lose every bit of momentum. Domingo German and Chad Green blew the five-run lead, capped by a Jose Altuve walk-off homer, to hand the Yankees a disastrous loss heading into the All-Star break.
To talk about Sunday’s nightmare and recap a disappointing first half of the season, we bring you a new edition of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Jeff Nelson, featuring an interview with the Yankees Spanish radio play-by-play voice Rickie Ricardo.

The Subway Series brought some fireworks to The Bronx over the weekend, holding the largest crowds there since 2019. There were 42,000 fans at each of the doubleheader games Sunday and 40,000 on Saturday. Unfortunately for the home fans, the Yankees didn’t give them a ton to cheer for. Should Hal Steinbrenner have made a firing on Thursday? Oh yeah, and the Subway Series is here!
There’s lots to discuss on a special edition of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Jeff Nelson, featuring a crossover Subway Series segment with the “Amazin’ But True” hosts Nelson Figueroa and Jake Brown.

To talk about everything Yankees, we bring you a new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Jeff Nelson. Our guest this episode is Jeff Nelson himself as we look back to his career on and off the field.

It was quite bizarre and has led to lots of discussions surrounding foreign substances that pitchers have been using for a long, long time. There are lots of layers to this onion with Cole, pitchers and the entire game of baseball.

The Yankees did not throw away an opportunity to beat the Astros this week. See what I did there? The prescription for winning baseball is not more cowbell, but games against the Detroit Tigers. Woof, what a really bad baseball team they are. The Yankees took advantage of that in sweeping fashion over the weekend. The Bronx Bombers are now 14-14 and get a tough task with the Astros coming to town on Tuesday for a three-game series. Lots to get into and we got all your Yankees talk covered on a brand new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Jeff Nelson, featuring a chat with the newest NY Post sports columnist, Ian O’Connor.
EPISODE 45: YANKEES FAN THERAPY SESSION FEAT. SHANE SPENCER
April 19, 2021
Deep breaths, Yankees fans. Goooooooos-fra-baaaaa. It’s only been 15 games, but the Yankees are 5-10 and the worst team in the American League. They were swept by the Rays in The Bronx over the weekend and did not show much life against a team that has now beaten them five out of six times already.
To vent about Yankees frustrations, we bring you a new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Yankees great Jeff Nelson, featuring an interview with Nellie’s old teammate, three-time World Series champion outfielder Shane Spencer.
EPISODE 44: YANKEES ROTATION IS A PROBLEM FEAT. CC SABATHIA
April 15, 2021
The Yankees rotation is going to need to go deeper in games if they want any chance to win a title this season. The Bronx Bombers are off to a sluggish 5-7 start early in the season. The rotation has struggled. The bats have not been consistently hitting. There’s been some reasons for concern early on.
To talk about that along with having an incredible conversation with CC Sabathia, we bring you a new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Jeff Nelson.
EPISODE 43: RAYS CONTINUE OWNING YANKEES FEAT. KEN SINGLETON

EPISODE 41: THE GIANCARLO STANTON SITUATION FEAT. ROY WHITE
April 5, 2021
Panic! Panic! Just kidding, it’s three games into a 162-game season. The Yankees lost two of three games to open the season against the Blue Jays in The Bronx. The bats didn’t do much, but they did get six dominant innings out of the bullpen Sunday from Michael King. Shockingly enough though, Giancarlo Stanton was booed by some Yankees fans…on Opening Day. He then was not in the lineup on Sunday. Should fans boo a player this early, and should Stanton be getting a day out of the lineup so soon?
To answer these questions, break down what the guys saw in the first three games and look ahead to the series against the Orioles, we bring you a new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Yankees great Jeff Nelson, including an interview with two-time Yankees World Series champion Roy White.
EPISODE 40: YANKEES SEASON PREVIEW, PREDICTIONS FEAT. NICK SWISHER
March 29, 2021
Real baseball that counts is just a few days away. The Yankees open their season in the Bronx on Thursday against the Blue Jays. They will have just over 10,000 fans in the building after a season with no fans in Yankee Stadium. On paper, the Yankees are regarded as one of the best teams in baseball. Can they avoid the big injury bug? Can they win a 28th World Series title?
To preview the Yankees season, we bring you a new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and four-time World Series champion Jeff Nelson, featuring a chat with the Post’s Ken Davidoff and former Yankees outfielder and current special adviser to the GM, Nick Swisher.
EPISODE 39: YANKEES’ FINAL ROSTER SPOTS FEAT. BUCKY DENT
March 22, 2021
There has not been too much drama or too many injuries at Yankees spring training so far this March (knock on your local wood). The fifth spot in the rotation is one of the question marks with the Yankees, 10 days away from opening the 2021 season in front of around 10,000 fans at Yankee Stadium. The other big question is which players are coming up from Tampa to join the 26-man roster.
To discuss the rotation, those final roster spots and the return of fans to the stadium, we bring you a new episode of “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Jeff Nelson, featuring an interview with two-time World Series champion Bucky Dent.
EPISODE 38: DEIVI GARCIA AS YANKEES’ 5TH STARTER? FEAT. JOMBOY
March 15, 2021
Yankees fans know what the biggest concerns are going into the 2021 season. They’re the question marks in the starting rotation and injuries. The Yankees have had injury problems the past few years that have truly plagued them. They are trying to avoid that this year, but starters coming back from injuries will have fans a little bit worried. They have already lost a key bullpen piece until May in Zack Britton.
To talk about injuries, spring training and who the fifth starter could end up being, we bring you a new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Yankees great Jeff Nelson, featuring an interview with Jimmy O’Brien, more commonly known as “Jomboy.”
EPISODE 37: HEALTH WILL DETERMINE YANKEES’ FATE FEAT. GARY SHEFFIELD
March 8, 2021
Aaron Boone returned to the dugout this weekend just a few days after having pacemaker inserted. It gave players and fans a huge sigh of relief after the news came by surprise to some last week. Injuries to Yankees players have been a major reason for concern the past few seasons. Once again this year, staying healthy will be paramount as the Yankees compete for a World Series title.
To talk about the importance of staying on the field and everything going on in the world of the Yankees, it’s time for a new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and four-time World Series champion Jeff Nelson. The guys have a fantastic interview with former Yankees outfielder and baseball legend Gary Sheffield.
SEASON 2
EPISODE 36: CONCERNED WITH YANKEES STARTING PITCHING? FEAT. SUZYN WALDMAN
March 1, 2021
The Yankees are already a game into their 2021 spring training schedule. They went through the first game without an injury to speak of, which means it’s a grand success thus far. That’s going to be the big question for this team all season. Can they stay healthy? They brought a couple of starting pitchers in coming off injuries and have a few returning from injuries. Do they have enough to compete for a championship?
To address that and the offseason as a whole, we are back with Season 2 of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and four-time Yankees World Series champion Jeff Nelson. The guys were joined in the first episode back by longtime Yankees radio voice Suzyn Waldman.
EPISODE 35: SEASON IN REVIEW, RIP WHITEY FORD FEAT. RON GUIDRY
October 12, 2020
The Yankees season came to an end Friday night when they lost to the Rays in Game 5 of the ALDS. It was another disappointing season from a franchise that has won two World Series in the past 20 years. Lots has changed from the days of Jeff Nelson’s dynasty Yankees. Nellie and Chris Shearn talked about that on the season finale of the “Pinstripe Pod.”
Before getting into what happened in the ALDS, the guys opened up honoring Whitey Ford, who passed away at the age of 91 on Thursday. Nellie talks about his experiences chatting with him during spring training and Old Timers’ Days over the years. The guys then get into why the better team won as the Rays just had more pitching than the Yankees. Nellie says there is no accountability with the Yankees — it used to be championship or bust and now they seem satisfied to get into the playoffs. He talks about too many playoff games being scripted because of analytics. They then look ahead to the offseason and what this team needs to improve. Getting another frontline starting pitcher is key, because they can’t have faith that Luis Severino will come back and be the No. 2 starter. They don’t believe the Yankees should extend a qualifying offer to Masahiro Tanaka. Nellie would be a big fan of bringing Didi Gregorius back, moving Gleyber Torres to second base and DJ LeMahieu to first base. That could potentially mean finding a trade partner for Luke Voit. I pop on to wrap the segment looking back at all the great guests from Season 1 of the podcast, despite a whirlwind ride, when the world shut down days after we launched the show.
EPISODE 34: YANKEES ON BRINK AFTER PITCHING SHOCKER
October 8, 2020
Chris Shearn and Jeff Nelson are not happy. Almost all Yankees fans are not. It was time to rant about it on the latest “Pinstripe Pod” Yankees podcast. I tried to calm Shearn and Nellie down, but to no avail. They were still boiling on Thursday’s podcast after Aaron Boone and the Yankees decided to pull Deivi Garcia after just one inning Tuesday for J.A. Happ. No guest was needed for this episode. This was a Yankees therapy session.
The Yankees are down 2-1 in the ALDS to the Rays and are on the brink of elimination Thursday when they try to save their season and send it to a win-or-go-home Game 5 for both teams. Shearn and Nellie open the podcast examining the wild decision to pull Garcia after giving up just one run on Tuesday night. Nellie says “you can’t script a postseason game” and analytics have certainly started taking over. The guys talk about Alex Rodriguez’s strong comments on the Fox postgame show Wednesday night about GM Brian Cashman and the front office getting involved and how they tried to outsmart their opponent. “Don’t play Jeopardy, play baseball,” he said. A-Rod, who the guys have critiqued a bit for his color commentary during games, was spot on and is really good as an analyst in the pre-and-postgame role. It’s been discussed many times before, but guys relying on analytics and looking into their hats for how to face a guy has gotten out of control.
EPISODE 33: YANKEES-RAYS ALDS PREVIEW FEAT. JIM LEYRITZ
October 5, 2020
The Yankees and Rays do not like each other. Benches cleared during the regular season when the two teams faced off. Now they take each other on in the ALDS. Get your popcorn ready. This could end up being a classic series, even without a fan in the building in a neutral stadium in San Diego. To preview the series in its entirety, we bring you a brand new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Yankees great Jeff Nelson. The guys are joined in this episode by The Post’s Ken Davidoff from San Diego and two-time World Series champion with the Yankees, Jim Leyritz.
Shearn and Nellie open the podcast talking about the fierce rivalry this season between the Yankees and Rays. They talk about Game 1 being so important for the Yankees to win, the series being in San Diego and why this will be an epic series. The guys both believe the Yankees will win the series in five games.
The great Ken Davidoff then drops by from his hotel room in San Diego as he will be covering the series this week. Davidoff talks about what the pitching matchups might look like, why this should be a great series, the chirping between the two teams and why he thinks the Yankees will win the series.
EPISODE 32: YANKEES MOVING ON TO ALDS FEAT. KEN SINGLETON
October 1, 2020
Game 2 in Cleveland Wednesday night featured ups, downs, rain delays, grand slams, comebacks and everything in between. The Yankees came out on top thanks to a two-run ninth inning to win 10-9 and take the wild-card series in two games over the Indians. To break down the classic game, series and look ahead to the ALDS against the Rays, we bring you a brand new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and four-time Yankees World Series champion Jeff Nelson.
Shearn and Nellie open up the show talking about the Indians not showing up in the series after the Yankees limped their way into the playoffs. They open talking Game 1, Gerrit Cole’s strong outing and Shane Bieber getting rocked. “You’re never a true Yankee until you show how you can play in the playoffs,” Nellie said. The guys talk about the lineup setting the tone, especially the bats of Gleyber Torres and Brett Gardner in Game 1. They then dive into the wild Game 2 and the awful decision to start the game in terrible weather conditions, only to delay it again. The guys get into Gary Sanchez coming up big as Shearn calls himself out for saying he should not be starting. Sanchez hit the go-ahead home run in the sixth inning and a game-tying sacrifice fly in the ninth. Also, is DJ LeMahieu human? The Yankees MVP once again had a clutch game-winning hit in the ninth inning and needs to be re-signed in the offseason.
EPISODE 31: YANKEES-INDIANS PLAYOFF PREVIEW FEAT. GEORGE KING
September 28, 2020
The Yankees will begin their push for a 28th championship on Tuesday when they begin their best-of-three game series in Cleveland against the Indians. To break down the opening playoff series, we bring you a brand new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and four-time World Series champion Jeff Nelson.
The guys open the show talking about the Yankees’ struggles this week going into the postseason. Nellie points to the team not being very good defensively and how it could hurt them in the playoffs. They talk about having to face the Indians, which is the one team they did not want to face. Can Gerrit Cole beat AL Cy Young Award favorite Shane Bieber? Can the Yankees find a way to win two out of three games?
In “Nellie’s Nugget,” Nellie looks back at some of his favorite postseason memories with the Yankees. The guys wrap up the segment making their predictions for the series. They believe if the Yankees win Game 1, they will win the series.
EPISODE 30: DO YANKEES WANT WHITE SOX OR TWINS? FEAT. WILLIE RANDOLPH
September 24, 2020
The Yankees still are not sure who they will play on Tuesday when the playoffs begin. Will it be the White Sox, Twins or even the Indians? It seems like it will come down to the Twins or White Sox, but the final weekend of the season will determine their opponent and whether it will be in the Bronx or on the road. To dive into everything going on with the team going into the final weekend of the season, we bring you a brand new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Jeff Nelson.
We open the show with our “In The Paper” segment where I go through some of the biggest Yankees headlines and get reactions from Shearnie and Nellie. First up, it’s the future of Masahiro Tanaka. Was Wednesday his final regular season start in a Yankees uniform or will they bring him back next season? Second up, would the guys rather the Yankees play the White Sox or the Twins in the best-of-three first-round playoff series? The Yankees have had the Twins’ number in the playoffs, but this is a different season with no fans and a shorter series. Next, should the Yankees be resting guys against the Marlins this weekend or be going all-in to try and win these games? Lastly, should we lock in Gerrit Cole, Tanaka and J.A. Happ as the starters for Games 1, 2 and 3 next week?
EPISODE 29: YANKEES PLAYING FOR HOME FIELD FEAT. BOB LORENZ
September 21, 2020
The Yankees turned their season around in September, going on a 10-game win streak, before losing Sunday. Despite the loss, the Yankees have clinched a playoff spot with seven games to go. It seems like almost a lock that they will take on the Twins in the first round of the playoffs. To talk about everything going on with the Bronx Bombers, we present a brand new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Jeff Nelson.
The guys open the podcast getting into the Yankees putting it all together at the right time as their players got healthy. They look at this last week of the regular season still being meaningful baseball for the Yankees to get home-field advantage in the first round. They know the Twins very well in the postseason. Can the Twins get revenge this year? Nellie believes that Rocco Baldelli and the Twins want to face the Yankees and beat them this time. They get into how incredible Luke Voit has been this season and his sidekick DJ LeMahieu needing to be extended. They wrap up talking about how Aaron Boone should manage these final seven games. Shearn then holds up one of his Emmy Awards during the recording of the show before welcoming in his Emmy-winning colleague.
EPISODE 28: GERRIT COLE IS PAYING OFF FEAT. CHAZZ PALMINTERI
September 17, 2020
The Yankees’ 5-15 stretch seems like a lifetime ago. They are winners of seven straight games and decided to get Higgy with it on Wednesday as backup catcher Kyle Higashioka blasted three homers, leading the Bronx Bombers to a 13-2 win. To talk Higgy, the bats leading the way and everything going on in Yankees land, we bring you a brand new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Yankees great Jeff Nelson.
We open the podcast with our “In The Paper” segment, diving into the biggest Yankees headlines. The guys start with their surprise in Higgy hitting three homers and waiting to see that kind of night from Gary Sanchez. They talk about the lineup coming together, guys coming back from injuries and the big turnaround. They discuss Gerrit Cole’s monster numbers so far in September and him living up to the billing for this team. Will no off days during playoff series hurt the Yankees, potentially not allowing Cole to pitch three games in a seven-game series? Shearn isn’t buying it just yet, saying he’s “seen this movie before” with this team. Nellie points to the Yankees having the playoff experiences some of these other playoff teams don’t have, but looks at playing in Los Angeles in the playoffs, where the ball doesn’t carry as much, potentially hurting them.
EPISODE 27: HOW THE YANKEES SAVED THEIR SEASON
September 14, 2020
After a 5-15 stretch that had the Yankees nearly on the outside looking in for a playoff spot, they have won five straight games to turn their season around. A four-game sweep over the Orioles very much saved their season over the weekend. To look at how the Bronx Bombers did it, we bring you a brand new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Yankees great Jeff Nelson.
The guys open the show with the funny part of the weekend, which was Aroldis Chapman seemingly pooping his pants. Poop has been a common theme of the podcast as Nellie has told multiple stories involving it, putting a new meaning to Nellie’s Nugget segments. Has that ever happened to Nellie or anyone he played with? The guys then get a bit more serious, diving into the Yankees’ turnaround and exactly how they did it. It took some good starting pitching, bullpen improvement and some timely hits. The Yankees now control their own destiny to get that second-place spot in the AL East and potentially move from the No. 7 seed to No. 5. The Yankees lineup gets some help in the coming weeks, but what will happen to Miguel Andujar and Clint Frazier? The guys believe they both deserve playing time. Do the Yankees have a shot at catching the Rays and winning the AL East or is it too late?
EPISODE 26: YANKEES HANGING ON BY A THREAD FEAT. CHRIS CARLIN
September 10, 2020
Stop the presses: The Yankees have won a baseball game. After dropping five straight, the Yankees got back in the win column with a much-needed victory over the Blue Jays on Wednesday night. To get into the win and everything going on in Yankees land, we bring you a brand new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Jeff Nelson.
We open up with the “In The Paper” segment, giving out the top Yankees headlines. The guys start with the big win Wednesday and what it felt like to win a game again. They discuss the bats coming alive and Deivi Garcia pitching a gem. Should Garcia be in the rotation the rest of the season and be part of the 2021 rotation? They also get into the struggles of Gary Sanchez, who is hitting a lowly .121. Should the Yankees trade him this offseason? Shearn and Nellie look at the big games against the Orioles, the upcoming schedule and if the Orioles or Tigers can catch the Yankees for the final playoff spot.
EPISODE 25: YANKEES FREE FALLING IN THE STANDINGS FEAT. MEREDITH MARAKOVITS
September 7, 2020
The Yankees are free falling in the standings. Just a couple of weeks ago, they had the best record in the American League. On Labor Day today – or should I say Gleyber Day – they have fallen to the eighth and final playoff spot in the AL. It has certainly been a fall from grace for the Bronx Bombers. To get into the Yankees’ struggles, we bring you a brand new “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and four-time World Series champion Jeff Nelson.
Shearn and Nellie open up the Gleyber Day edition of the podcast wondering if Aaron Boone will put him in the lineup or give him a day off. That leads into an epic rant from Shearn on the Yankees’ struggles and guys continuing to get days off, not understanding the gravity of the situation. With just 20 games to go, the clock is ticking and there isn’t much time to give guys days off when you are just two games up on even making the playoffs. Nellie explains how the Yankees do not want to play those top teams in the AL, because their starting rotations are better. They talk about players’ mindsets changing, not wanting to play every day and lose out on money if they get hurt, and how the times have changed from Nellie’s days. They discuss Giancarlo Stanton’s injury, him hardly playing any games since his first year here and the long rehab times. The guys look ahead to 10 huge games coming up against the Blue Jays and Orioles.
EPISODE 24: TIME TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE YANKEES?
September 3, 2020
The Yankees are finally done playing the Rays…at least in the regular season. They finished up their 10-game slate against them on Wednesday with yet another loss, finishing 2-8 against their AL East foe. The Rays have had the Yankees’ number and it has shown on the field and in the standings. To look back at the series, we present to you a brand new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Yankees great Jeff Nelson.
I joined the guys to open up the show with our weekly installment of “In The Paper.” We start with the tragic passing of Mets legend Tom Seaver. We get into what he meant to the Mets franchise, New York sports and Major League Baseball. He made throwing a complete game look easy. After paying respects to “Tom Terrific,” the guys react to the Rays continuing to beat the Yankees. Are they concerned? Are the Rays just a superior team? They discuss guys getting hit and share their thoughts on the suspensions handed down to Aroldis Chapman, Kevin Cash and Aaron Boone. They backed what Cash had to say, standing up for his players. Nellie believes Chapman should have been suspended more than three games. The guys talk about how heated the rivalry has now become and all of this being a part of the game. Shearn goes off on a rant about it. We wrap up the segment with me trying to get a discount on the steak dinner bet if the Mets can beat the Yankees on Thursday. It didn’t work.
EPISODE 23: GARY SANCHEZ’S YANKEES FUTURE FEAT. JACK CURRY
August 31, 2020
After the Yankees dropped both games of the doubleheader to the Mets Friday to make it seven straight, it turned around for them on Saturday and Sunday. The Bronx Bombers won in walk-off fashion on Saturday, again in walk-off fashion in extra innings in Game 1 on Sunday and once again in extra innings in Game 2. To talk about everything going on in Yankees land, we present a brand new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and four-time World Series champion Jeff Nelson.
Shearn and Nellie open the podcast getting into the Subway Series and Gary Sanchez’s big grand slam Sunday. Is this the start of a turnaround for him? Nellie explains why the Yankees should consider trading Sanchez in the offseason. The guys get into J.A. Happ’s strong outing and how important that was. They also get into Deivi Garcia’s terrific MLB debut and why he should stay in the rotation in September. They then get into Sunday’s comeback win and the shift the Mets put on Luke Voit, which helped lead the Yankees’ rally. I then yell about Edwin Diaz, Luis Rojas and the Mets’ ineptitude in trying to close the game out and now having to get the guys a steak dinner.
EPISODE 22: JUDGE HURT AGAIN, YANKEES LOSING STREAK FEAT. DAVID CONE
August 27, 2020
The Yankees have lost five straight games and go into the five-game Subway Series this weekend reeling. They have a ton of guys hurt and the latest is Aaron Judge, who got hurt yet again Wednesday night against the Braves. That’s where we start on the latest episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Jeff Nelson.
I read off some of the biggest stories to the guys and get their reactions in our weekly “In The Paper” segment. Judge came first and foremost. Are the guys worried about the constant injuries and his inability to stay on the field? Should Masahiro Tanaka have been pulled? He said he emptied the tank after the game. Is that concerning at just 66 pitches? Gerrit Cole finally had a rough outing, giving up three homers and five runs in his first loss since May 22, 2019. Should there be any worries over Cole? Are the Yankees purposely holding off from J.A. Happ so he doesn’t reach 10 starts to get the $17 million vesting option? Finally, the guys look ahead to the five-game Subway Series, what young pitchers we might see make starts for them and if they should consider making a trade before the deadline. I then make a steak-dinner wager with Shearn and Nellie over the series this weekend.
EPISODE 21: DO THE YANKEES INJURIES EVER STOP?
August 24, 2020
The Yankees had the whole weekend to get the three-game sweep at the hands of the Rays off their minds after the Subway Series was postponed due to a positive COVID test from a Mets player and coach. To get into the week ahead and all the Yankees injuries, we present to you a brand new episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and four-time World Series champion Jeff Nelson.
Shearn and Nellie open up the show talking about the return of Aaron Judge this week when the Yankees go to Atlanta Tuesday and how important it will be to have him back in the lineup. They get into the rest of the Yankees’ long list of injuries from Gleyber Torres to James Paxton and the rest of the walking wounded. The guys talk about the Rays sweeping the Yankees in the Bronx last week and their dominance over them this season. Are the Rays the better team right now? As we were doing the show, I break the news about the rescheduled Subway Series games reported by Joel Sherman happening over the weekend and what it means for the schedule and rotation moving forward.
In “Nellie’s Nugget” this week, he looks back to a story from the 1996 Yankees and superstitions. It involves guys burning their gloves and gear and it resulting in a fire in the bullpen, leading to the game being delayed a few minutes.
EPISODE 20: SUBWAY SERIES MEMORIES FEAT. GRAEME LLOYD
August 20, 2020
The Rays have had the Yankees number so far this season, winning five of the first six games. On the latest episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and four-time Yankees World Series champion Jeff Nelson, the guys dive into the team’s struggles against their AL East rival and talk about the Subway Series this weekend.
We open the show with the “In The Paper” segment where I go through some big Yankees headlines and Shearn and Nellie react. First up, it’s the struggles against the Rays. Should the Yanks be concerned that they have not been able to figure out the Rays? Next up, it’s Gerrit Cole…should he have stayed in the game Wednesday night? Do the guys like his leave-me-in-the-game mentality? Third on the list is Zach Britton. If he misses significant time, will the Yankees bullpen be fine? Finally, we have a good debate on the Subway Series. I think it’s awesome, fun and should be continued to be played every year. Shearn thinks there’s no point of it anymore and that there should be no interleague play. Nellie explains why he loved playing the Mets and looks back to the memorable 2000 World Series between the New York teams.
Speaking of the Yankees and Mets, Graeme Lloyd played for both and won two World Series in 1996 and 1998 with the Yankees. Lloyd joins the show over the phone from Australia to talk about what he’s doing over there, rivalries when he played and him and Nellie look back to their memorable brawl with the Orioles. Lloyd told Nellie that if Armando Benitez hit Tino Martinez that they would run out of the bullpen and charge the mound and by the time they got out there, the benches had already cleared. It was a unifying moment for the 1998 Yankees. Shearn asks Lloyd about the infamous poop bullpen stories that Nellie has told, memories winning with the Yankees and what it was like going to the Mets in 2003. He also talks about how the Subway Series was special.
EPISODE 19: YANKEES EMBARRASSING RED SOX FEAT. HOMER BUSH
August 17, 2020
Is the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry a thing of the past? On the latest episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and four-time Yankees World Series champion Jeff Nelson, the guys talk about the Yankees’ three wins over the Red Sox. They get into just how dominant the Yankees have been over their division rival and how bad the Red Sox are this season. Nellie calls their pitching staff the Pawtucket Red Sox.
The guys discuss the rebuild going on in Boston and why there never could be any sort of rebuild in the Bronx. They both rant over how tough it is to listen to Alex Rodriguez in the broadcast booth and some of the bizarre comparisons he makes. Nellie turned the volume off the TV down and turned the music up. The guys talk about Aaron Hicks’ approach against the shift and him needing to focus on beating the shift and getting on base instead of swinging for the fences, especially as the leadoff hitter. They get into Aaron Judge’s injury, him saying he is 100% now and kind of throwing the training staff under the bus. They also talk about DJ LeMahieu landing on the IL, the week ahead against the Rays and J.A. Happ’s vesting option for 2021.
Then 1998 Yankees World Series champion Homer Bush joins the show. EPISODE 18: FRAZIER TIME, JUDGE CONCERNS? FEAT. LUIS SOJO
August 13, 2020
We opened up the latest podcast with the “In The Paper” segment, where I read the biggest Yankees headlines going on and Shearn and Nellie respond. We start with positive vibes after the sweep of the Braves and what the guys thought of the the two wins. We then move onto the latest Aaron Judge injury as he deals with “lower-body tightness.” We laugh about Shearn’s “pelvic stiffness” group text and whether or not the guys are worried about yet another Judge injury. After Clint Frazier returned with a bang Wednesday night, should he be getting more playing time? We then get into the possibility of teams not playing the full 60-game schedule getting a chance to make the playoffs based on winning percentage and how bad that would look for Major League Baseball.
The guys wrap up the open talking about Masahiro Tanaka’s latest start, his low pitch count, all these days off and how it might shift the rotation and they look ahead to the four-game set with the Red Sox and their brutal pitching staff. NY Post baseball insider Joel Sherman then presents “Sherman’s Hot Corner” on where the Yankees stand right now and how they can improve.
Former Yankees infielder Luis Sojo, who won four World Series with the Bronx Bombers, then joins the show. Sojo talks about how special it was joining Nellie and the Yankees in 1996, being a hero in Venezuela, winning five batting titles there and the difference being like an idol playing there and fighting for one of the final roster spots here in the big leagues. Nellie also went with Sojo to play in Venezuela and players used to be honored to be asked to travel to play in winter ball. He talks about his game-winning and World Series-winning hit in Game 5 against the Mets that broke my 9-year-old self’s heart and it being the biggest moment of his career. How many times did that ball bounce up the middle into center field? Sojo also talks about how weird yet incredible it was for the Yankees to bring him back in 2003 as an active player after playing in his first Old-Timers’ Day game a bit earlier in the season.

EPISODE 17: ANOTHER STANTON INJURY DEBACLE FEAT. RON BLOMBERG
August 10, 2020
Chris Shearn and Jeff Nelson open the show talking about the good and the bad to take from the series against the Rays. The good was James Paxton striking out 11 batters and looking good up until the seventh inning. The bad was yet another Giancarlo Stanton injury sending him to the IL, where he has spent much of his time with the Yankees. Who will replace Stanton? Should Mike Ford be playing every day? They also talk about how strong the Rays’ pitching looks and Yankees-Rays truly becoming a rivalry after the chirping between the two teams over the weekend.
NY Post baseball columnist and good friend of the program Ken Davidoff then drops by with Shearnie and Nellie. Davidoff talks about some of that chirping and the Rays being able to give the Yankees a run for their money. The Rays trot out arm after arm from that bullpen, making them a dangerous team, especially in the short season. They also talk Stanton’s constant i+
Former Yankee and the first designated hitter in baseball history Ron Blomberg then joins the show. Blomberg talks about how special it was being the first DH back in 1973, how it all happened and why he loves the universal DH now and why it should be a part of baseball forever. They wrap the segment with their thoughts on seven-inning doubleheaders and if they should be a thing past this season.
Shearn and Nellie then talk about splitting the doubleheader on Wednesday and the good and bad that they saw. They dive into J.A. Happ’s struggles and their worries with the starting rotation as a whole. They talk about Angel Hernandez being a bad umpire and Nellie tells a story about him umping one of his games and holding grudges with guys. They both agree that Mike Tauchman needs to potentially be an everyday player in the starting lineup with the way he is playing. In “Nellie’s Nugget” this week, it’s another story involving…yes…poop.
